Paraphrase text online without losing the meaning
Choose what the text should become: shorter, simpler, more formal, livelier or clear to a child. On the right you can see how the example changes, with the rewritten words highlighted. Paste your own text on the left.
Prompt sent to the chat: Paraphrase the text in simpler words: short sentences, everyday words instead of complex phrasing. Keep the meaning and the terms. Text: “Plant leaves contain chlorophyll, which enables the plant to absorb the energy of sunlight and use it to convert carbon…”
Paraphrasing is free on the Starter plan (30 units of energy). The result arrives as text in the chat, ready to copy, or ask for another version.
Words: 39 → 28 · same meaning: chlorophyll, light, carbon dioxide and water, oxygen
A sentence, a paragraph or a whole article
The longer the text, the more it matters to say what must not change. Here is how to phrase the request in each case.
- One sentence
- How to ask: “Give me 5 versions of this sentence: two shorter, two more neutral, one conversational”
- What to watch for: Handy when a phrase “doesn’t sound right” and nothing better comes to mind. Pick one and paste it in.
- A paragraph
- How to ask: “Retell this paragraph in your own words, keep the order of ideas and every figure”
- What to watch for: Check that no qualifier like “on average” or “according to 2025 data” has dropped out.
- An article or chapter
- How to ask: First: “I will send the text in parts, rewrite them all in one style”, then 2–3 paragraphs at a time
- What to watch for: Ask to keep headings and lists, otherwise the structure may “melt”.
- A letter
- How to ask: “Rewrite the letter to be more polite and shorter, keep the request in the first paragraph”
- What to watch for: For a letter from scratch there is a separate page – business letter.
Paraphrase this paragraph for a report. Do not change: “inventory turnover ratio”, 12.4%, North Ltd, the director’s quote.
ResultOver the quarter, North Ltd’s inventory turnover ratio rose by 12.4%. The main reason is that the warehouse now ships orders faster: goods now sit six days less on average.
Terms, figures and names stay the same
By default the AI tries to keep the meaning, but it sometimes picks synonyms too boldly: “revenue” turns into “income” and a “contract” into an “agreement”. In a professional text that is already a mistake.
List what must not be touched: terms, names, numbers, dates, quotes. Once you have the result, ask: “compare it with the original and tell me whether any fact got lost”.
Old website copy in new words
The service page was written five years ago, prices and approach have changed, and it still reads like a manual. Give the AI the old version and what has changed.
Our company provides carpet dry cleaning services using professional equipment. The turnaround time for the work is 3 to 5 business days. Delivery is carried out by the company.
We clean carpets with professional equipment, lifting stains, odours and dust from deep in the pile. We pick your carpet up and bring it back in 3–5 business days. You don’t have to go anywhere.
Request: “Rewrite the copy for the service page: plainer, in the company’s voice as ‘we’, customer benefit first. Keep the timings and facts, about the same length.” Before publishing, proofread the result or run it through the spelling check.
Four levels of compression
There are different ways to shorten. Name the level you need and you won’t have to redo it.
Almost lossless, −20–30%. Cut repetition, filler and padding, keep every idea. Good for an article that exceeds a character limit.
By half. Keep the essentials, drop examples and minor details. This is how a talk script or a paper abstract is made.
Key points. 5–7 one-line points. For notes, an update to your manager or exam revision.
One sentence. The gist for a headline, a description or an answer to “what is this about?”.
What to check after paraphrasing
- 01
The emphasis shifted
“May affect” became “affects”, “some customers” became “customers”. Look for where the careful words went missing.
- 02
It no longer sounds like you
If you write in your own voice, add a couple of your own sentences as a sample: “write as plainly as I do here”.
- 03
The language changed
Rewriting a text in another language is translation. There is an AI translator for that, and for school work, the essay page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I paraphrase text for free?
Yes. It is a text scenario and works on the Starter plan with 30 units of energy. In TryChat only image generation is paid.
How do I rewrite text in my own words without changing the meaning?
Say in the request what to keep: terms, figures, names, the order of ideas. After the answer, ask the AI to compare it with the original and list any differences – that makes a loss easier to spot.
What if I don’t like the first version?
Ask for 2–3 more versions or refine it: “less formal”, “without the word ‘utilise’”, “a third shorter”. Edits happen in the same dialogue.
Can the AI shorten a text without losing the meaning?
Yes, if you name the level: “by 20%”, “by half”, “into 5 points”. The stronger the compression, the more detail goes – decide in advance which details matter.
Can I paraphrase text in an academic or business style?
Yes, name the style in the request. For research papers there is a separate page on AI for scientific articles, covering structure and abstracts.
How long can the text be?
A paragraph or a couple of pages can go in whole. A long article is easier to send in parts within one dialogue, so the style matches across all parts.
